Group's posts with tag: multiply blog 2

What are tags? You can give your posts a "tag", which is like a keyword. Tags help you find content which has something in common. You can assign as many tags as you wish to each post.

Customizable tag boxes
Screenshot of Tagged Content Box edit dialogIf you use the "Boxes" homepage layout (as opposed to "Linear"), you can now create new boxes on your homepage that display content based on the tags you've given them.

That's right, in addition to the usual boxes like "Photos" and "Videos," you can now mix and match tags to your heart's content... and display your creations on your Multiply homepage. If you ever wished for a box displaying your latest posts related to, say, business, pirates and trees, this feature makes your wish come true.

To set this up, just click the familiar "Customize Site" link on your homepage, and follow this with the aptly-titled "Add Tagged Content Box" link. You'll get a pop-up that you can use to set the options for your box -- particularly what should be displayed (pick one or more tags), and how it should be displayed (box title, number of entries to display). Once you've created your box, you can manipulate it like any other content type box: drag it around, hide it, edit it... And here's the best part: you can make multiple tag boxes!

Customizable tag clouds
We've also added a new option for the way you display tags on your homepage. Rather than displaying your entire tag cloud at the end of your Welcome Message, you can now save space by choosing to only display a limited number of tags. And if you're the administrator of a group, you now have this setting available to you within your group!

Also customizable: original video download setting
On a completely different note, we've had a number of users ask for a way to disable the "Download Original" links for videos they've posted, as you can with photos. Starting now, this is possible. Make sure you've enabled Advanced Posting for your account, and you'll find this option whenever uploading a video, or editing one already uploaded.

So, how are you planning on using these new features? Do you already have custom boxes in mind? Are you planning on going the more extreme route, completely replacing your normal boxes with custom tag boxes?

A recently released feature that probably hasn't received the recognition it deserves is the aptly-titled Allow viewers to download original video file option.

This is not for want of trying, as we did announce it... but admittedly also sort of buried it at the bottom of an entry announcing a much bigger, more exciting, ultimately overshadowing feature. And to think, we announced it without even so much as a screenshot!

So, in case you're curious — or have never seen it — here's what it looks like:

The option appears just after posting a new video, or when editing an existing one. Keep it checked to allow download, or uncheck it to disable it – it's that simple. Either way, you (the poster) will still be able to download the original file, when available.

This is enabled via the Advanced Posting option... so if you already have enabled it in the past, you're ready to start using it. (Wondering what other features are enabled by Advanced Posting? Have a look at this blog's brand-new Advanced Posting tag!)

Using Multiply is simple enough that it just takes a few clicks (and perhaps a keystroke or two, to set a title) to post and share content with the people you know. That's enough to keep most of us happy.

And then there are those who'd like more fine-grained control over certain aspects of Multiply. For them, we have the Advanced Posting option. This isn't a new option, but rather, is one that is sometimes overlooked.

Enable this once and you'll have access to the following options for your Multiply account...

advanced posting options... highlighted!
  • Post without notifying people on the message board.
  • Prevent people from replying to your posts.
  • Prevent people from seeing your hi-res original photos and ordering prints from your albums.
  • Allow any combination of people from your Network, Contacts and Individuals to see your posts.
  • Specify the date of blog entries
  • Bonus! Enable or disable our cross-posting feature! (Note that to enable cross-posting for the first time, you'll need to set up a content import in the usual way... Post -> pick the content type -> "Add [type] from")

The brief but surely unbearable wait is over–we're quite pleased to announce that it's now possible to add, as we previewed a couple days ago, Faceboxes to identify people in your (and others') photos!

But that's only part of the story... here's what's new today on Multiply:

screenshot depicting a photo being faceboxedFaceboxes are here!
Have you ever come across a group photo on Multiply and recognized some people you know... but wondered who at least a few of the others are? Well, wonder no more.

The best way to get started with Faceboxes is just to try adding a new one. It's easy–simply find an appropriate photo containing either yourself or someone you know... and click their face! Up will pop the "Who is This?" tool pictured to the right.

screenshot displaying new facebox notificationsIf the user you're Faceboxing is already a contact of yours, start typing their name or choose it from the contact list below. If they're not, feel free to add their name or, if you'd like to invite them to Multiply, their e-mail address! (Don't worry; their e-mail address won't be shared with anyone else.)

Naturally, you're able to choose who can add Faceboxes to the photos you've posted (see Posting Options under settings), and can remove boxes if someone has incorrectly identified you. As you can see to the left, you'll be notified of new faceboxes just like you are for new posts and comments.

Note: now that clicking a photo serves to allow you to add a new Facebox, you can view the full-resolution original version by clicking the linked resolution text next to the image title, e.g. Happy People (1000x750).

(New: post to groups!)

You asked for our Post via E-mail feature for posting to groups... and now you've got it! Group administrators can enable this feature, and set a secret pin for posting their groups, by editing the group's profile. Members of the group can then view the group's profile to find the secret pin.

(Note that, for security purposes, group members can only post to a group using the e-mail address they currently have registered to their Multiply account. One can double-check or change that e-mail address on their My Account settings page.)

(New: security options!)
You can now set a default access level for future posts you make via e-mail on your Post via E-mail settings page. Additionally, if you've never used the feature before, you can also set a secret pin (which acts like a password, though you shouldn't use your Multiply account's password as the pin!) to get started with the feature.

Moderated group posting

If you're the administrator of a large public group, you may already be familiar with the hassle of keeping, say, clearly unwanted posts from becoming an annoyance for both you and your group's members. So now, we at Multiply will be doing more to make sure these are our problem–not yours. For new group members or recent Multiply accounts, this may mean a slight delay before your post appears in the group, but this should be minimal. So while we'll be catching obviously unwanted posts, group admins should still be on top of things, removing and reporting any unwanted activity.

We hope you cotton to these improvements–feel free to shoot back with your say below.

The recent introduction of Multiply 3.0, in the category of oft-requested features, also introduced the ability to completely hide certain content types from your homepage when using the "Boxes View" site layout. This means that the way your site is presented to those who visit... is entirely in your hands.

Note that the changes you make to your page are, of course, only cosmetic in nature. Hiding a certain type of content does not delete it as well. Content types you've hidden are still accessible by visiting your dedicated pages for photos, videos, and so forth.

And yes, you can restore content types you've hidden! Every time you hide one, you'll see a "Restore" link appear for that type in your homepage's sidebar. The links will, naturally, only appear for you (and not your visitors) when viewing your own page, and will allow you to quickly and painlessly snap that section back where it goes, pronto.

Not too long ago at all (just a couple weeks!) we introduced our brand-new Promote Your Site feature, allowing you to create a Multiply Badge. This made it possible (and easy) to build a small "badge"-type image containing as much or as little contact information from your profile as you wish. And once embedded in another website, it would also serve as a link back to your Multiply site, inviting those who see it to come check out your Multiply page.

Well, you now have the option to bring a little bit more of your Multiply account wherever you go on the Web, all within your badge.

Now when you go to create a new badge, the first thing you should decide is whether you want a simple image badge or a brand-new extra-spiffy Flash-based super-badge.

Seriously. Choose whichever you like.

But if you were to choose the newfangled Flash-based version, you also have the option of embedding some of your more recent posts directly into the badge! Choose from your latest photos, videos or blog entries. Then sit back and watch as the preview badge cycles through the content. Once you've got the badge just as you like it, copy the HTML from below and paste it anywhere on the Web where Flash is allowed. Or if it isn't allowed, perhaps the static image version will have to do.

Either way, to make or update your own badge, click the Promote My Site link on your homepage.

Note for Myspace and Friendster badge users: We've updated the special link you use to get friends from these sites to join you on Multiply. New links you generate will actually use a special version of this badge, the only difference being that users who click that badge will be offered the option of becoming your Multiply contact. Technically, this works the same way it has since we introduced the feature last December, but your new links will look much nicer!

To grab the most up-to-date version of the badge, click Invite followed by the link for the appropriate service.

With the ability to see what's being shared in your entire social network, your "My Multiply" Message Board is almost certainly the best way to see what your friends, family and other people close to you, are up to.

'Custom Filter' linkUsing the tabs across the top of the page, you can show more (or less) of what's being shared in your network with one click. However, Custom Filters really let you take this to the next level.

What we're doing here is creating a custom page view, which will allow you to quickly and easily display only the types of posts you want to see right now on your Message Board. Click Custom Filter. This tool will appear:

the 'Show Posts From' option box

Simply select how much (if any) of your network you would like have appear, if you'd like to have posts from any group (or groups) included, any other specific users you would like to add, what type of content you'd like the filter to display, and whether you'd like to only be shown unread posts that meet those criteria. Give the Custom Filter a name if you'd like it saved for later, or don't bother if you only plan to use it once.

Then click OK!

When you do, you'll find your Message Board displaying only what you're interested in seeing at the moment. When you'd like to remove the filter and view all of your network once again, simply click the [remove filter] link that you'll find at the top of your Message Board. And if you chose a name for your filter, you'll be able to select it later by clicking Custom Filter once again.

Here are some of our favorites:

Go to the Messages page and you'll see three new icons to the right of each message. Here's what they mean:
Click this to make sure you're e-mailed the next time a new reply is added to this message.
Click this to make sure this message always "sticks" to the top of your Messages page and doesn't get bumped as new messages are added.
Click this to "block" this message, making sure you never see it on your Messages page again.
